ALONE AT SEA: The title track! Many of you have heard this song at the shows and the story of how it came to fruition. But if you haven't caught one of my recent shows, this song was born out of my new love that is Vancouver Island. Watching the ferries, sailboats, cruise ships, and barges all day out of our window I can't help but have it influence my writing. This is especially true when considering every home I have ever had was landlocked and far from any significant body of water. I find it incredibly soothing and meditative. The hustle and bustle of touring and trying to make a career happen (at my tender age of 50) is a wonderful thing to stay youthful and keep my zest for life and travel. Home being near a coastline has made me spend time near any body of water when I'm on the road. As much as possible I will take a stroll or even a few minutes by a river, lake, or beach (sandy or rocky) to center a bit and remember where I'm really at and what I'm really doing.
Deeper than that I suppose (without being too pretentious) is the hope that I can truly be "interdependent" in my relationships. I have a wandering spirit; always have. My solo touring goes from complete anonymity (as I know I am here writing this in LAX) to on stage (albeit in front of modest crowds, it is particularly engaging and a social endeavor for me — those who know me know that for me performing is about connecting).
But I digress — feels like I'm sounding pretentious again.
Being alone on the road often feels like being "Alone At Sea," and who doesn't want to know that they will be ok on their adventures and at home whether together with friend and loved ones or entirely on their own?
“Variety is the very spice of life, that gives it all its flavor." - from William Cowper's poem: The Task.
I don't know about anyone else, but I have begun a phase of my life where I know deep down, almost always, I'm okay. Whether it's on stage, at home with family, or alone at sea.
Oh, and be on the lookout for both the Spanish and French versions we recorded of this tune (seriously we did!).
