Moving right along with some exciting dates in Colorado, North Carolina, and the Midwest…I’ve been getting a lot of comments and questions along the road I feel the need to address.
Of course I love getting out on the road by myself! I love playing with a band, and last night in New Orleans I did just that with a stellar group of musicians at that. I love festivals, fly-dates, and clubs. What seems to surprise many of my musicians friends is that I also love renting a car in some circuit and playing for new people.
There’s really nothing solitary about it, until I’m in my room for the night or if I am literally driving. I met so many cool and wonderful people just this week.
At my first gig I had a fella show up who showed me a video of myself, Slaid Cleaves, Ivan Brown, and Oliver Steck playing in his living room about 22 years ago! I also was “gifted” a night by myself in the only National Park in Louisiana at a lake house (I skipped the Super 8 even though i had already paid for it) and ended up writing well into the night and the next morning. That same night a fan greeted me with something I haven’t heard in a while but means so much to me — “you and your livestreams and interviews really got me through the pandemic and it’s nice to finally meet you in person.” Man, that really got me.
In New Orleans I met more than a handful of David Lindley aficionados as eager to celebrate his music as much as I did (as well as Papa Mali’s birthday). Hung out with Alvin Youngblood Hart backstage and swapped all kinds of stories. Man, he killed it that night; his performance was stunning.
This is just a small taste of last week. So much more I could tell you but those who know me know I get a little long winded with the stories.
I’m so excited about Colorado this week!
So for everyone asking (musicians and fans) it is not always an easy life (there’s a little more driving and flying than I would like on this tour), but as I have said before and will say again probably until my inevitable demise, it is a charmed life.
See you soon!
