I’ll have one full and one half day before I fly to Texas - check ALL the dates on my own, opening up for Ian Moore in Denton, TX and OKC, OK, the big plank band show at The Saxon Pub in Austin, TX on Mar 11, and the subsequent Texas tour with Michael O’Connor (who will be joining myself and the band at Saxon gig as well as Cari Hutson!).

On to the blog!
The title of my newsletter, blog, patreon post, and new song I’m sharing is “Have Heart, Will Travel.” I co-wrote it with Michael O’Connor a few weeks ago. Michael and I have been able to write an entire new album’s worth of music this month, with him in Texas gigging his rear end off and me in the desert of California and on tour. We plan on recording another album a la “Nothing To Prove” as soon as I get there.
I mean, I’m supposed to be writing for the new album I’m doing in early April, right? Besides vacation for me and my wife, that’s what I have been here for — and it has gone well. I’ve written a ton. Who knows what will make it on that album, but since I’ve been focused between gigs specifically on writing, I have really made some progress (I’m sure my executive producers for the new album will be happy to hear that!).
This song though, man it’s really been in my head a lot today as Donyne and I took our last jaunt through Joshua Tree National Park today. It is written for any troubadour, vagabond, or anyone with a restless spirit that cries out for the road.
In the end we all come out even
Nothing taken, nothing owed
Have heart, will travel
no goodbyes on the road
I’m not sure if I could ever finish a song link this without my friend Michael O’Connor. We’ve even edited the lyrics a little since I recorded this demo, but that’s an eye into the songwriting process for those who are interested. Sometimes a line takes a long time to make itself known. Sometimes it takes a deep dive. For me, it comes mostly when I give it the space to come into existence.
Does that sound a little pretentious or pompous? I certainly don’t mean it that way. I’m sure glad I don’t think of myself as any kind of “hot shit” or anything. I’m just someone who doesn’t know how to do anything else and is doing the very best they can. The older I get, the less I care about who likes what I write and what I write with my friends. I have a small but mighty fan base, as well as great friends and loving family. Not to mention I now have 2 homes and musical scenes that I am a part of and feel at home in: Texas and Vancouver Island.
Donyne, Alice, and I will hit the road in a few hours. The desert has been kind to us.
