I tried to keep it short (and sweet) last week to save room for the photo dump, but here we go…
The whole reason I came to Hawaii in the first place was Kathy and Mel Finkenberg. Those two have been trying to get me over here for a couple of years, and without their hard work (and also the hard work of Terri Ewton I of course mentioned last week) there would be no way I could have done this. On more than one occasion on this trip I remarked, “some people go their whole lives and never see something like this.” It’s true, and for my sometimes-difficult but always-worth-it career, I get to see and experience things. I am forever in their debt, and I’d like to think we have become good friends. They are quite an amazing duo, and if you are lucky someday you might meet a couple of folks as nice as them.
So before I head to chilly Texas (sounds weird, right?) I wanted to just throw a few more pics from my journey.
Also, BIG thanks to Teri Sugg, Dave, Jack, and Sherry in Honoka’a and sure can’t wait to come play for you again next year!
Everybody cross your fingers for me and next year will be even better (and I can bring Donyne!!!).
I have fallen in love with the plumeria tree.
Just Look at how it flowers!
Donyne had told me to make sure I got a whiff of one, and the next morning Kathy had laid one on the lanai for me :)
“Taste of Hawaii,” and there are no bad flavors.
The End of the World is a public shoreline located along Lekeleke Bay - I encourage you to google and check it out, with video. I could not capture just how high the waves go!
Anyone who knows me, knows I am not a fan of playing barefoot onstage. At places like Gruene Hall and The Continental Club, I would advise you to get a tetanus shot before laying your feet in the things that have been spit, sweat, or spilled on those stages. However the custom in Hawaii (as in Japan) is to remove your shoes before entering a home, and I played two house concerts. These were the first two shows I have ever played barefoot. I sent this picture to Donyne before the show and she replied, “you go Jack Johnson.”
Such a sleepy turtle on this black sand beach, such a well needed rest from a long journey.
Just like our dog Alice, my hosts’s dog Malu has no problem getting comfortable. Or making anyone else feel loved and at home.
Just a pic I took of a lovely bay somewhere. Mel said he likes to go paddle-boarding here but it was too choppy during my stay.
Kilauea had just erupted the day before so we made a trek down. This is just one small pool in an enormous mouth. Most definitely the most impressive natural wonder I have ever seen. I even got to catch one small spurt but missed it on camera. Another moment I will never forget.
Tacos and friends, Mel and Kathy and me earlier today. Color me as grateful as always and then even a little more.
