So here I go again…
This little blog post comes to you direct from United Airlines somewhere between Vancouver and Denver, on my way to Austin, TX.
I had a wonderful two weeks home in beautiful BC. There we three family birthdays including my own (thank you all for the well wishes - I don’t feel any older) in that short time and I enjoyed them all with Donyne and family. A few long walks with Alice through Beaver Lodge and by the Quinsam River, some quality time with my extremely better half, and even went and saw Civil War in the theater (despite the mixed reviews I thought it was riveting!). I worked on a great new friend Grace Morisson’s new record by “flying in” some steel and vocal parts from my home studio. Her and Jon Evans (producer) are doing some really great work. I imagine you’ll hear about her from me again sometime soon, hoping to tour a bit with her don the road.
Now on to the business of music, what I’m calling the “Mad Minstrel May Tour.”
1 week in Louisiana and Alabama
1 week in Colorado
1 week in North Carolina and the midwest
Even my head is spinning on this one people…
Here’s the rundown with some highlights and guest appearances (mine and others).
Papa Mali’s Polyester Birthday Bash - A Tribute to David Lindley (sponsored by Guitar Player Magazine!). I really wanted to do this last year but couldn’t swing it. If you don’t know the late David Lindley’s music, it’s time to check it out. You probably know “Mercury Blues” (which he wrote) and even if you aren’t a guitar aficionado you most likely are familiar with the soaring lap slide guitar solo on Jackson Browne’s “Running On Empty.” Well, that was also Mr. Lindley, but he has LOADS of other music and had a brilliant career spanning decades and influencing countless musicians of every ilk. I believe all the proceeds go to David’s widow. Alvin Youngblood Hart, The Iguanas, and the inimitable Carolyn Wonderland will be on this star-studded bill as well, just in time for the end of Jazzfest.
This month (tomorrow) I’ll be putting up a version of the David Lindley song “Cat Food Sandwiches” to my patreon page. So if you aren’t already a member and want to go hear it check it out!
Not that Mobile, AL (Scrappy Bud Newcomb and I re-fell in love with that town on our last tour of the southeast together), Alexandria, and Lafayette, LA are anything to squawk at! First week stands to be a great week.
Then comes Central Colorado with 2 gigs I know and love and another I am really excited about. Some tickets left here and there so grab ‘em while you can.
I’m working in a visit to my family in Ohio before a quick jaunt to Asheville, NC. My old pal Ben Balmer and his new bride reside there and I love that town too. Mountain music at it’s finest seethes from the pores of it’s local musicians. We’ll play a duo gig in town, and then I’ll head out for the rest — and the rest, my friends…is the midwest.
Dayton, OH for my first gig at the Brightside Theater! Ferndale, just outside Detroit, MI and a big car town all the way, is where I’ll play the only house concert on this run. I love house concerts as you may or may not know, and this ended up being the only one. A wonderful place with wonderful folks called Music In The Gazebo.
Then comes a very special night in Louisville, KY with another new friend I met at a songwriter festival in Wyoming last year - Aaron Bibelhauser. The two of us are getting together for one night to play a song swap opener (about an hour I think) at The Monarch which we will most likely end with a couple tunes we have written together since the festival. Aaron is in the “bluegrass royalty” circles and man I love his stuff. You will too.
The final gig of the tour is the incomparable and long-running Mountain Stage in Charleston, WV. I have been fortunate in the past to play there a couple of times; maybe three. The last was maybe with Joe Ely? This to me is a milestone, an honor, and feels pretty damn good. I’m gonna get to play my songs with the incredible backing band (the Fire Ants) on this nationally syndicated radio and streaming show. To say the very least, if you check out the list of past performers (even in just the last year!) you will know why this will be such a big deal for me, and such a wonderful way to end the tour.
After I head home for a breather comes the Pacific Northwest again for a week, a quick stop in Missouri, and then Texas I’ll be coming your way!
Don’t forget to head over to patreon.com/jeffplankenhorn to hear my version of the David Lindley tune (and more than 3 years of music, livestreams, and exclusive content).
See you soon everyone,
Plank
