Before I head back to Texas for the last 4 gigs of the year (with my great friend Michael O’Connor performing songs from our 2 duo albums New Sunlight and Nothing To Prove) I thought I’d finish up this photo dump from the amazing 3 week tour of Texas last month.
Michael O’Connor and I hope to see you in: Buda, The Woodlands, Austin, and Galveston!
Also if you didn’t already see, my patreon song for December is a joint-pages collaboration with the inimitable Bruce Hughes. Squeeze meets AC/DC. Seriously. Check it out and join my patreon and his as well. It’s one of the best ways to support musicians today. Here’s a link to his page, you know how to find mine. patreon.com/brucehughes
Alright back to the photo dump.
When I last left you I had driven all the way from a 2pm gig in Rockport back to Austin to play with The Resentments at The Saxon Pub. Always worth it, and this was no exception.
Monday night I headed over to The Backstage at El Mercado South once more, this time to take part in Ben Jones and Barbara Nesbitt’s Monday Night Supper Club. It just so happened to be proclaimed (in writing, by the mayor) “Barbara Nesbitt Day” in Austin, TX. I have to tell you that Ben Jones hit me with a doozy; he composed a song for Barbara and honestly a lot of these “I wrote a song for you in honor of this-or-that” can be pretty unremarkable, but it was absolutely brilliant, fun, and a blast to play on. Kudos to Ben for writing such a heartfelt and fun tune and to Barbara for being as worthy as ever for her official day in Austin.
The next day Michael O’Connor and I headed to Gruene for a show and no, sadly we were not playing our home for 20+ years each Gruene Hall or our favorite venue there the Redbird Listening Room. Gruene Hall had some sort of “double booking” so we were shipped over to the winebar The Grapevine In Gruene to play. We had a wonderful turnout of folks who knew our music, but it was a bit of an early show and hard for some of our die-hard fans to make it that early on a Tuesday. We still had a great time, as you can see below by the look on our faces…just kidding.
Believe it or not, I took Wednesday off. So I regrouped, did some business, had a zoom meeting with my fabulous and awesome booking agent, and other errand-type things. For instance, my brand new guitar from Germany had an issue with the pickup installation, and I had to take it to Ben Nippes at South Austin Music for repairs. It was the first music store Ray Wylie took me to when I moved to Austin in 2000, and I’ve been going there ever since.
Thursday, with my trusty older Oahu acoustic lap steel in its place, I headed to House Of Rock in Corpus Christi to play again with Michael O’Connor. We had to send a message to our sister-in-pinball friend Jaimee Harris who was actually hanging out (and performing all over The Netherlands) in the exact town I was recording in three weeks earlier (Utrecht, NL). If we get a chance to play Iron Maiden pinball, which is a fantastic game, she was going to know about it. She told me there was a Big Lebowski pinball machine in Utrecht! Somehow I missed it…
The show at House Of Rock was great fun. Saw some of my executive producers from the Alone At Sea album, and then it was down the road again to the next gig.
Older I get, the more I have to do this because I just can’t survive on fast food and greasy spoons…
Not sure if I am going to be able to sneak in four more pictures but I am going to try. Keep getting “email is too long” messages…
