Some of you know I went down to the Gulf Coast the week before my most recent Texas run to do some recording. I'm trying to make a fully solo record. Every song has my voice and one instrument (piano, acoustic guitar, or acoustic slide). Some tracks (like this one) I tap my foot on a "porch board" to add a little percussion.

John Macy at Coastal Bend music down in Fulton, TX I met through my longtime collaborator and friend Michael O'Connor, and we recorded 12 songs for this project thus far. John is the brains and the braun behind Coastal Bend Music and the Rockport Songwriter Festival I'll be doing once again in November. We had an absolute blast and held a private party/performance right in the studio on the last night before I had to head out on tour.

I'm so lucky to meet people like John. I really love what we have put together so far and am super excited about said project, so here's a taste.

I've been wanting to write a song about a suitcase for a few months. Whenever I get the suitcase out before a tour, our dog Alice gets sick. Literally. Poor thing knows I'm leaving for a while and the schnauzer in her "terrier-schnauzer" has a pretty weak-lined tummy. It recently has made me think about the imagery of the suitcase and the stories they have. Especially the old ones. Before the wheels and retractable handles.

Longing for home, a coming adventure, trinkets and tchotchkes, and travel without fear of destination are some of the images I first thought of and some of them even ended up in the song.

I played it a few times on the tour at solo gigs and with the band, to good response. Now I want to know if you dig it.
