Gigs and festival performances listed below as always…
It’s Sunday, 6pm in Austin, TX. It’s exactly 100° F. In a half hour I’ll head to The Saxon Pub for the last gig of these 3 incredible weeks. That’s 18 gigs, 2 full days and 1 half day working in recording studios as a multi-instrumentalist, 1 in person guitar lesson, and 4 days and 3 nights where I took a jaunt over to Columbus, OH to visit my family.
I love it, I always will, and I truly don’t know how to do anything else — really. Playing as a solo artist, fronting an incredible band, playing outdoor festivals and clubs; well that’s hard to beat. Playing as a solo acoustic act at various venues and house concerts for more of a ‘storyteller’ show; well that’s loads of fun too. Playing on other people’s records, jumping around from instrument to instrument and singing backups and being a small part of the makeup of someone else’s creative output; that’s incredibly gratifying, and you can learn and try out things you may do on your own records, as well as get inspired to write or try sounds and approaches in the future. “You never stop learning,” that old trope is certainly true for me. Teaching lessons in person or on video chat like Zoom, Skype, or Facetime; I do it infrequently enough (and I charge a lot) so that my students really have to learn to take what I give and go with it, but it is so satisfying. I’ve had many a student over the years go on to great things. Oh, and when I’m not on the road, I really also enjoy creating music on a monthly basis for my patreon page and followers (join if you haven’t already!), and in addition I especially enjoy remote recording for records and creating background music for various commercials and websites and such.
As I head into festival season and a really stellar looking 2 months with the new Canadian group of musicians backing me up, I just want to say thank you, as always, for giving me the chance to do what I do.
And a huge thanks to all the Texas musicians below and all the audiences across the state for making the last month and ALL the gigs so damn fun!
