I will be putting out a brand new song later this month, but for now...
Sometimes you feel like the hamburger at the banquet.
Picture the scene - the Analog at Hutton Hotel in Nashville for NSAI and my wonderful manager John Porter has put me between two giants in hope of some exposure. NSAI has been around for over thirty years I think, looking out for songwriters (even lobbying for them in DC!) for rights to their music, royalties, and money. A worthy gig to play for a great cause on top of the education I'm about to get.
To my right is Bill Loyd, to my left is Pat McGlaughlin. This is a song pull (also known as s song swap in Austin, or a workshop in most of Canada). These two fellas have more hit songs than I could even begin to mention.
Suffice to say, you may want to Google/Wikipedia them both.
The Bill Lloyd from Foster & Lloyd
The Pat McGlaughlin, who amongst so many other things, co-wrote songs with John Prine for his last album, Tree Of Forgiveness (with Grammys, plural, to prove it).
I was in songwriter hog heaven (been in Nashville so...).
Not only can they write, but their ability to command a stage and perform said songs was to such a high bar that I was in awe. I was in school.
Sorry to gush so much, but I really mean it.
I had a bit of a setlist for myself, knowing I'd get about 4-5 songs in this show. By my second tune I was not following the setlist anymore. I chose to play a song from my Covered/Uncovered Vol. 1 EP, co-written with Gabriel Rhodes and Michael Fracasso called "Bird Out On 9th." Many of you already know the story, but i tell a short version of it here.
At the end of the song, if you turn it up really loud you can hear Pat McLaughlin say, "are you going to put that on your album? You should. It's really good man. Really. Nice."
Friends, that was a thrill. The whole show was stellar, but I thought I'd give you, my biggest supporters, a little moment that meant a lot to me.
I started recording the new record on Saturday and I already can’t wait for you to hear it.
