Last year I had the bright idea to have my wife, our dog Alice, and myself take a month-long vacation in California. I need to write some new songs for my upcoming album recording in April with famed producer Colin Linden, and I figured all I would have to do is book some weekend gigs and I’d be able to offset the cost of such a long trip. I’d already be paying for gas, food and lodging for a solo run, and figured maybe I’d end up with a few new cool places to play and a few new radio stations playing my music in California.
2023 trip — mission accomplished. On so many levels. We got to spend the majority of the month in Yucca Valley (just outside Joshua Tree National Park), the gigs and radio went fabulously, and made enough to pay for more than a little of our excursion.
(Alice was particularly fond of the trails at Pioneertown)
So here comes 2024 and we decide to try to return to California, but I’m thinking of someplace a little less south, and a little more central. Donyne (and Alice) concur. Maybe someplace halfway between the LA stuff and the Bay Area stuff. We scored a little airbnb in Paso Robles, only about 30 minutes from the coast and deep in wine country (Donyne is a wine gal), and our trips to the surrounding areas have been out of this world. I’ve been writing like crazy, and have more than enough musical direction and tunes started for the next album. There’s nothing like a morning walk on the beach or through the woods to get music going in my head that never would have been there. On top of that, I carry a little Moleskin notebook and pen so that I’m ready to not just come up with new lyrics, but also to edit and figure out what songs need what.
I have a couple more gigs this week (Pasadena Wednesday and Santa Monica on Friday), and on the drive home we’ll stop in Novato so I can do an opening slot for the one-and-only Shawn Phillips. Oh and I’ll also make a stop at Jefferson Public Radio in Oregon to play a few tunes and say thanks for all the love they’ve been giving the new album.
So to all of you out there who follow and support, this year is just getting started.
I can’t wait to see you.
